The city of San Juan dates back to 1521 and is the second
oldest city in the Americas.
In San Juan, you can explore the Old City, leisurely strolling
the cobblestone lined streets, stopping in the quaint, little shops and soaking
in the Spanish architecture of the buildings. Examine the 42 foot high city
walls, which were constructed to protect the city from attack. Make your way to
El Morro the historic fort, which guards the harbor entrance some 140 feet above
sea level. This spot is ideal for viewing the Atlantic Ocean, Puerto Rico’s
coastline and taking pictures. Visit the San Cristobal Fort which was completed
in 1771 to protect the city from land invasion.
Located about 1 hour outside San Juan is the El Yunque
Rainforest. The rainforest located some 3,500 feet above sea level and comprises
over 28,000 acres of lush vegetation and wildlife. The rainforest trip does
include substantial amount of walking and visitors should bring a raincoats
since the forest has over 200 inches of rain annually. Be sure to visit the
Yohaku observation tower and the Coca Waterfall located nearby.
^{There is also a tour of the Barcardi Rum Distillery where you
will learn the history of the Barcardi family, how rum is made and visit the
Barcardi Museum.
Puerto Rico has beautiful beaches ideal for sunning, swimming,
kayaking, scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing and horseback riding. For those who
would like to try their luck, San Juan also has casinos and Las Vegas style
shows as well as museums and shopping.
San Juan is great destination with a lot to do and see. On the
cautious side, visitors are recommended to stay in tourists areas and not stray
off the beaten path. As in all ports, all extra jewelry, money and valuables
should be kept aboard ship when going ashore.}}
