Why MSC Cruises Cancelled 2007 Bermuda Season

MSC Cruises has their eye on expanding to year-round cruising from the US. Late in 2006, MSC Cruise had announced a series of cruises from New York sailing to Bermuda and the Caribbean.

Within 3 months of the announcement, MSC decided they were going to focus on the booming European trade. The season from New York was cancelled. Reports stated that bookings were substantially lower than expected.

According to an interview Rich Sasso - President and CEO of MSC Cruises USA - had with CruiseAgent Magazine, he stated there is still an interest in sailing from New York. The Bermuda season was cancelled because Bermuda was supposed to construct a berth for MSC and the berth was not available.

In 2008, MSC Cruises will have one round-trip sailing to Bermuda from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida - copying a similar itinerary performed by Costa.

Sasso eluded that in 2009 MSC may position a ship in the Northeast US. More to come.
